Hydraulics

Manufacturing and maintenance on hydraulic cylinders require precision finishes to provide optimum lubrication. Reducing friction and wear, decreases downtime and maximizes performance and seal life.

OVERVIEW

The hydraulic manufacturing and maintenance industry plays a vital role in keeping key sectors like construction, mining, aerospace, and manufacturing running smoothly. While exact market size figures may differ, there’s no denying its impact. From powering heavy machinery on job sites to supporting precision systems in aircraft and factories, hydraulics are everywhere. This widespread use highlights just how essential the industry is to modern infrastructure and production.

Hydraulic systems drive essential metalworking machinery and are dependent on precise components like pumps, valves, cylinders, and hoses. For peak performance, these parts must have smooth, accurate surfaces free of flaws. Even minor imperfections can cause leaks or breakdowns, impacting productivity and product quality. To prevent this, metalworking professionals focus heavily on surface integrity and system upkeep. Predictive maintenance is a key strategy, using real-time monitoring to spot early signs of wear or failure. By addressing issues before they escalate, this approach reduces costly repairs, prevents unexpected downtime, and keeps operations running smoothly. In a field where performance and efficiency are everything, proactive maintenance isn’t just a best practice—it’s a competitive advantage—and BRM has the tools to help.

Achieving Superior Finishes

Use of Industrial Wire and Abrasive Brushes & FLEX-HONE® Tools

In hydraulic manufacturing and maintenance, surface finishing is employed to achieve the desired smoothness and texture of components. Common applications include deburring, polishing, and flexible honing. If the hydraulic cylinder finish is too rough, the U-cups and seals may wear out. If the cylinder surface is too smooth, the hydraulic seals may leak. The benefits of using FLEX-HONE tools include improved sealing surfaces, extended component life, and enhanced overall system reliability. To achieve the necessary surface finishes, metalworking professionals employ various tools.

COMMON SURFACE FINISHING TOOLS FOR HYDRAULICS

  • FLEX-HONE® Tools:

Also known as ball hones, these tools consist of abrasive globules mounted to flexible filaments. They are particularly effective for removing burrs from intersecting holes without altering the geometry of the part, helping produce a consistent surface finish that enhances lubrication retention and reduces wear and edge blending for smoothing sharp edges to prevent stress concentrations and potential failure points.

  • Industrial Wire Brushes:

These are used for deburring, cleaning, and surface preparation, effectively removing rust, scale, and other contaminants.

  • Abrasive Brushes:

Embedded with abrasive grains, these brushes provide controlled material removal, ideal for polishing and finishing surfaces to precise specifications.

Surface Finish

Plays 3 vital roles for hydraulic components

Sealing Efficiency

Smooth surfaces ensure effective sealing, preventing fluid leaks that can compromise system performance.

Wear Resistance

A refined surface reduces friction between moving parts, minimizing wear and extending component lifespan.

Corrosion Resistance

Proper finishing removes surface imperfections where corrosion can initiate, thereby enhancing durability.
